The first and most important question you must answer is:
Do you know how to safely operate an automobile?
This question is so important, it's asked several times. If you don't know how to drive, choose a Designated Driving School, this is the most reliable way to get a driver's license in Japan. You are basically guaranteed to get a license if you can follow the directions. If you can speak and read Japanese, you'll have more options. Your friends may have other suggestions for shortcuts, but if you are serious, a Designated Driving School is the serious choice for people who can't operate an automobile safely.
Are you in a hurry to get a driver's license in Japan?
If you are in a hurry to get a driver's license in Japan and you can operate an automobile, there are two serious options available.
If you are lucky enough to have a lot of vacation and can speak Japanese, consider a Driving Camp. These are a type of Designated Driving School, but you and live at or near the driving school for a couple of weeks. These are very fast and very expensive, a Driving Camp may require reservations several months in advance. It's possible you'll get lucky and can enroll right away.
If your schedule is flexible and you are in a hurry, using a Non-Designated Driving School is an option. These schools usually do not have their own driving courses; however, they are very flexible and can tailor their training to your individual needs. Your schedule will be defined by availability of testers at the driving center.
Do you have no money for training?
It's possible to get a driving license in Japan without attending a driving school. This is almost always a bad idea, unless you live in a rural area with no traffic, wide roads, and a patient friend or family member. With Independent Learning, you learn to drive with a friend or family member's automobile, then take the necessary exams at the driving center.
Please don't consider this option, unless you live and work on a farm or have no other choice.
